Višegrad is located in the east of Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 16 km from the border with Serbia. The municipality of Višegrad has an area of 448 km², and the average altitude is 324 m.
Due to its geographical, strategic and economic position, Višegrad had a turbulent history and was the target of many invaders. It was mentioned for the first time in 1433, when it belonged to the powerful Serbian feudal family of Pavlović, which governed the medieval town of Dobrun. On the top of the hill above the Drina bridge, there are traces of the old town. Even in the Middle Ages, Višegrad was an important point on the road Dubrovnik-Sarajevo-Niš-Constantinople, through which a large number of merchants from Dubrovnik passed. Under the Austro-Hungarian administration, Višegrad acquired the contours of a city center. The First and Second World Wars left the city in ruins, most buildings were badly damaged, including the famous Visegrad bridge.
Cultural and historical monuments such as the Visegrad bridge, as well as natural resources dominated by the Drina river, provide favorable conditions for the development of rural tourism, cultural tourism, and attract numerous visitors from the country and the wider region for activities such as fishing, hunting, kayaking, biking and hiking.
